The whole scare fits in 10 seconds. These are the beats:

1. 0:00, late-night call: lying across the bed, you laugh into the phone and twirl the cord.
2. 0:03, the doorway: a masked figure is standing in the dark hallway behind you. You haven’t noticed.
3. 0:04, bubble gum: you blow a big pink bubble while it watches.
4. 0:05, something’s off: the bubble pops, your smile fades and your eyes slide sideways.
5. 0:07, right behind you: the lights flicker, and it’s at your shoulder, both of you staring at the lens.

Film it yourself

• Prop your phone on a tripod at the foot of the bed, with the open bedroom door in the back of the shot.
• Turn the hallway light off and the fairy lights on, so the doorway stays dark.
• Have a friend in a black robe and a plain mask step into the doorway at three seconds and stand still.
• On the flicker, cut the lights for a moment while your friend moves behind you, then both stare at the lens.
