The short answer

There are three free ways in. Film the dance with two or more friends on one phone, film yourself doing it alone, or give an AI video tool our written prompt plus your selfie and let it invent the crew. Filming costs an evening and some practice; the AI route costs retries, and on free tiers usually a watermark and no song.

The paid shortcut is the Mi Chico page: one selfie in, and you come out leading a crew of three on a rooftop at dusk, with the song already over it.

Every route at a glance

A desk with a phone showing a selfie, a laptop open on a video editor and a numbered shot list on paper
Film it, prompt it, or start from a selfie.

What you’re recreating

Looking up from the ground at a dusk sky: a bearded man in a black puffer, a young woman in a sage-green hoodie and a curly-haired man in a red flannel lean in over the lens
0:01: the phone on the ground
The three grin down into the lens with their heads close together, flashing peace signs
0:02: peace signs
The young woman in the sage-green hoodie leans right into the lens, smiling, the two men just behind her
0:04: the lead’s close-up
Wide shot on an empty rooftop parking deck at dusk: a young woman in a sage-green hoodie dances in the middle, a bearded man in a black puffer on the left and a curly-haired man in a red flannel on the right
0:08: the row on the roof
The three dancers on the rooftop deck at dusk, all with both hands laced behind their heads
0:14: hands behind the head
  1. The phone lies on the ground facing the sky, and the crew crowds in over it.
  2. Grins and peace signs straight down at the lens.
  3. The lead leans in for a close-up, then a palm covers the camera.
  4. From about 5 seconds: the crew dances in a row, head to toe, as the beat gets louder.
  5. Around 14 seconds: everyone laces their hands behind their head.

The palm over the lens is the hinge of the whole clip. It hides the switch from the ground shot to the dance, so get it right whichever route you pick.

Free route 1: film it with your friends

A woman sets up a phone on a tripod in a sunny living room while a friend in a crop top stretches, a ring light beside them
Prop it up at waist height for the dance.
  1. Learn the bounce and the hands-behind-the-head finish first; the dance guide breaks the moves down.
  2. Clip one: set the phone face-up on the ground, recording. Lean in, grin, flash peace signs, and end with one person’s hand over the lens.
  3. Clip two: stand the phone up vertically at about waist height, a few steps back, and dance in a row with the lead in the middle.
  4. Join the two clips in CapCut or in the TikTok editor, cutting right after the hand.
  5. Post and pick the Mi Chico sound in the app, with your original sound off.

A rooftop car park is the trend’s home, but only film where it’s allowed, away from moving cars and well back from the edge. A park or an empty court at dusk looks just as good.

Free route 2: film it alone

No crew free tonight? The same two clips work solo. Do the ground shot on your own, a big grin and a peace sign into the lens, then the dance with the phone propped up. You lose the row of dancers, so make up for it with bigger moves and a good backdrop: open sky, street lamps coming on.

Free route 3: our prompt in an AI tool

  1. Pick an AI video tool with an image-to-video or reference mode, such as Kling, Higgsfield, Runway or Veo. What their free tiers include changes often.
  2. Attach one clear selfie of you, from the front.
  3. Copy the prompt from the Mi Chico AI prompt guide and paste it in.
  4. Choose 9:16 and 15 seconds, or the longest length you’re given.
  5. Generate, then add the Mi Chico sound when you post.

The usual misses: a fourth dancer appears, the two made-up men drift into looking like you, someone turns their back, or you end up in a hat you never wore. The prompt guide has a fix for each. Expect two or three runs.

Three dancers mid-groove on a rooftop parking deck at dusk, a young woman in a sage-green hoodie in the middle
One selfie in: you, in the middle

On the Mi Chico page you upload one selfie. The video opens on the phone on the ground with you and two dancers leaning over it, then your close-up and your palm over the lens, then the three of you dancing the routine on the rooftop deck at dusk, you in the middle, in your own face and clothes.

One Standard video uses 65 credits. The smallest pack that makes one is $9.90 for 90 credits (1 video), a one-time buy whose credits never expire, and plans start at $19.90 a month for 270 credits. If a video fails, its credits come back.

It’s 15 vertical seconds with the song and no watermark, ready in a few minutes. We email you when it’s done, it waits in My videos, and your photo is deleted automatically 7 days after upload. All prices are on Pricing.

So which one?

  • You have friends who are up for it: film it together. It’s free and it’s the real thing.
  • You like experimenting and don’t mind a watermark: try the prompt.
  • You want the crew, the rooftop and the song without asking anyone: use one selfie.

Fragen

Can I do the Mi Chico trend for free?

Yes. Film it with friends on a phone and add the sound in the app, or try our prompt in the free tier of an AI video tool with a selfie. NowStarring itself is paid, with no free video.

How many people do I need?

The clip that started it had five friends. Three is enough to read as a crew, and that’s the size of our version. Solo works too; it just looks less like the trend.

Do I need a parking garage roof?

No. Any open, flat spot with sky behind you works: a park, a quiet court, an empty lot. If you do use a car park roof, pick one where filming is allowed, away from cars and from the edge.

Will a free AI tool add the song?

Hardly ever. Free AI clips are silent or come with the tool’s own music, so you pick the Mi Chico sound when you post.

Can I put my friends or my pet into the AI version?

Not on NowStarring yet: our Mi Chico video takes one selfie, and the two dancers beside you are made up. For a real crew, filming it together is the free way.
